About the WVU Symphony Orchestra
The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra is affiliated with the School of Music at the College of Creative Arts. The ensemble is comprised of WVU students and members from the local Morgantown community.
The WVUSO typically presents four concerts a year, with an additional concert in the spring for the winners of the Young Artist Competition. The orchestra performs both standard orchestral repertoire (recently Dmitri Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Maurice Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2, and Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto) and more contemporary works (WVU Composer-in-residence Dr. John Beall's Symphony No. 2). Members of the WVUSO can also be heard performing in Theatre and Dance and Music Department productions such as Bizet's Carmen.
Along with our local concerts each semester, the WVU Symphony Orchestra takes its show on the road. Last year the orchestra did a week-long tour and performed in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia and this year we will be performing in Fort Worth, Texas.
The WVUSO is an official student organization at WVU, and members enrolled in the orchestra class are automatically members of the organization. WVUSO was made an official organization in the Spring of 2011 with the installation of the WVUSO Cabinet.
